The pandemic forced many historians to utilize online archives, and I was inspired to collect many of those resources here. This page will remain available but is not regularly updated as of February 2022.

Digital Collections: List of Primary Source Websites from the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations

This collection is extensive and compiles electronic resources to aid in the research of U.S. foreign relations but will be of use to scholars in every field of history. Organized by nation and region with eight categories for each region: Government Diplomatic Document Collections; Corporate and Private Records; Foundations; Private Library Archives and Collections; University Collections; Newspapers; Cultural Institutions and Resources; and General or Subject.

Guide to Online Archival Research from The Graduate Center, CUNY 

The Mina Rees Library has assembled an extensive set of databases and collections but also guides and tools. The library describes the research guide as: "​Though libraries around the world are shuttered because of the COVID-19 crisis, it is still possible to do some archival research online. Libraries, archives, and museums have been digitizing items in their collections for years and sharing them widely.  This page offers tips and suggestions for finding digitized primary sources in subscription databases and on the open web."

National Archives, Native American Treaties Collection

Hundreds of Native American treaties available online through the National Archives Catalog. These treaties, with extensive additional historical and contextual information are available through Treaties Explorer  (or DigiTreaties).

The WIlliam L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan

The Clements Library has a large collection of digitized archival collections.

Project Gutenberg

An online library of over 60,000 free ebooks, with a focus on older works for which US copyright has expired.

FamilySearch Database

Large collection of genealogical and historical records, supported by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
